Stop Catalytic Converter Theft!

I love my 35s and I'd put them on again in a heartbeat. But there's a handful of things I wish someone had told me before I did it, so here's the honest version for anyone planning on daily driving theirs. First, don't go as aggressive with offset as you think on the Tundra. I'm running 0 offset without quite enough lift (2in front and 1in rear), and I've had to trim, then trim again, and I probably still need to trim more. If I did it over I'd either go a little less aggressive on the offset or do a real suspension replacement like the OME MT64s to get it sitting where it needs to be. If you go the cheap route, just be ready for some rub. Now the good part. The small rim, big tire combo soaks up an absolute ton of the road when you're daily driving. It has been so much more plush since I put them on, and honestly that alone is the reason I'd do it again. Here's the big warning though: do not listen to the dealership or the tire shop about your speedometer. I got two speeding tickets in quick succession. One of them I had cruise control set to 78 in a 70 and figured I was totally fine. Officer said he had me at 88. Now I'm fighting a fix it ticket and have to go get it corrected in person. Either get your speedo recalibrated or at minimum understand that it's going to be reading pretty far off. Last point, power. I honestly didn't feel like I lost much at all. It still has plenty of get up and go and is a riot off-road. MPG is harder to say since I now know my speed and mileage readings are off. If I assume the same rate of difference I'm seeing in speed, I probably lost 3 or 4 MPG, but I also went with the Falken Wildpeak AT, which I'm sure helps a lot on that front. Bottom line, I think the pros outweigh the cons, especially if you off-road frequently. But a lot of this is preference, so go in knowing the trade-offs. Anyone else dealt with the speedo being this far off after going up in tire size? Curious if recalibrating actually got people back to accurate or if it's always a little off.

The OEM catalytic converters on these trucks run around $1,200 per side online to replace, and that’s not even including labor. On top of that, some companies won’t even ship them to California because of emissions laws.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I get pretty paranoid leaving the truck out knowing someone could pull up and cut the cats out in a matter of minutes. These trucks sit high, are easy to get under, and the catalytic converters are super accessible.

It’s not like I live in some high-crime area or anything, but if something did happen, I’d have nobody to blame but myself. Part of my life goals is trying to minimize problems before they become expensive headaches.

I’d much rather spend around $300 on a nice stainless steel, American-made shield that helps protect the truck than wake up one morning missing catalytic converters and dealing with a $2,400+ repair bill that could’ve been prevented.

The shields themselves installed in about 10 minutes, bolted right on, and don’t rattle at all. Definitely one of those practical mods that isn’t flashy, but makes a lot of sense.
