I rented one of these Second Wind Flight XL teardrop trailers for the weekend and took it out to the coast. It completely changed what I thought I knew about trailer camping.
I’m coming from the world of RTTs and truck bed campers, so that’s what I was used to. But these setups are light, nimble, and incredibly easy to use. I always thought trailers and towing would be a pain, but honestly, I was wrong.
With a young baby, this might actually be the way to go.

First, let me touch on the trailer itself. It’s built on a 5x7 frame, has a queen-size bed, and only weighs about 1,100 lbs. It’s basically a blank canvas for modifications.
These campers are made locally to me in Northern California, and the guy who builds them is super knowledgeable and clearly has a real passion for what he does. What I like most is that he focuses on keeping everything as simple as possible, which means fewer failure points.
Some features I really liked about the trailer were the insulated walls, which kept us surprisingly warm. The top-mounted fan is a must and does a great job circulating air. The interior cabinets provide great storage for things you want to access quickly. And to my surprise, the simple slide-in table on the side of the camper was a solid 10/10 feature.

Like I said before, I’ve had a bunch of different rooftop tents, and at one point I ran a truck bed topper similar to a GFC. I could definitely see myself getting a topper again in the future, since they absolutely have their place—especially on tight trails in the Sierra Nevada mountains. But when it comes to comfort, it’s hard to beat the trailer.
We have a newborn baby, and I think our first camping trip went so smoothly because of the trailer. Warming up bottles at 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. was easily done inside. Having access to diapers and other essentials at a moment’s notice was also simple since everything was right there. It really changed the whole experience for me.
Would I do it again?
100%.
With how affordable it is to own or even rent one of these, I think I’m going to take it to a lot of places I haven’t visited yet but have always wanted to. Being able to carry the extra gear and still travel comfortably is going to be awesome.
