2023 TRD Off Road SR5 4X4
One of the biggest challenges in building a functional overland rig is figuring out how to maximize cargo space without giving up convenience—and that’s especially true when it comes to pairing bed racks with tonneau covers. On my 3rd Gen Tundra, I wanted the best of both worlds: a secure covered bed and the ability to mount gear, recovery tools, or even a rooftop tent. Thankfully, there are several solid bed rack systems on the market that are designed to work with tonneau covers—not against them.

Let’s break down some of the top options I looked into, and what makes each one stand out.

RexRacks (by Rave Off Road)
Let’s start with the one I’ve got my eyes on: the RexRacks system. Designed with modularity in mind, it offers a full range of mounting heights and works beautifully with low-profile tonneau covers like the RetraxPRO XR or the Roll-N-Lock M-Series XT. The T-slot rails make it easy to customize your gear layout, whether it’s maxtrax, rotopax, or a full tent setup. Plus, as a Rave Off Road ambassador, I can confidently say their customer service and quality are top-tier.

Leitner Designs Active Cargo System (ACS FORGED)
One of the most premium systems out there, Leitner’s ACS Forged rack is a beast. It’s compatible with select tonneau covers (typically retractable ones that mount inside the bed rails). Leitner’s system includes side gear pods, sliding crossbars, and an incredibly strong platform. It’s ideal for those who want to go all-in on modular storage. The catch? It’s pricey—but it performs like a tank.

RCI Bed Rack + Retrax XR Combo
If you’re running a Retrax XR retractable tonneau, RCI Metalworks makes bed rack towers that mount directly into the XR’s T-track rail system. This creates a sleek, integrated look while still giving you full bed security. The RCI setup is popular in the Tundra and Tacoma communities because it’s rugged and doesn’t require permanent drilling.

UpTop Overland TRUSS System
Another fan favorite in the overland world, the TRUSS bed rack by UpTop Overland is not only extremely customizable but also compatible with certain tonneau covers depending on the rail spacing. Their low-profile “Alpha” version works well with roll-up or retractable covers and offers clean lines and top-tier powder coating. The modular crossbars are perfect for mounting everything from awnings to shovels.

DIY T-Slot Solutions (Budget-Friendly)
If you’re on a budget or love to tinker, some folks have rigged Yakima or Rhino-Rack T-slot crossbars directly onto the XR rails of their retractable covers. While this isn’t as heavy-duty as full bed racks, it’s a clever lightweight solution for mounting bike racks, light cargo boxes, or small gear trays.

At the end of the day, the key is choosing a rack system that mounts to the bed rails or integrates into the tonneau’s T-slot channels. Avoid any rack that clamps over the rail lips if you want true compatibility.

I’m still dialing in my setup, but these are some of the best options I’ve seen out there. Drop a comment if you’re running one of these or have another creative setup!
