So I came back to the truck after work and everything looked normal at first, but turns out someone backed into it and took off. I didn’t even realize until later that night when my fiancée and I were washing it. We were soaping the bumper and I noticed the panel gaps were way off, that’s when it clicked. No scratches or paint damage, so I thought I got lucky, but once I crawled underneath it was a different story.
Toyota’s front end setup has the outer bumper tied into two main brackets, one up top and one down low. Toyota sent me the parts diagram, I’ll attach it for anyone curious. The pieces that took the hit are 53113E (upper bumper stay) and 52117F (lower bumper reinforcement). The bumper itself looks totally fine, which says a lot about how it’s designed, but everything behind it absorbed the impact.
I already ordered the 53113E replacement, still deciding what to do about the lower piece. Part of me wants to just use this as an excuse to go full metal bumper. What’s funny is that same morning I was telling a buddy building his Tundra to go metal up front, and now I’m wishing I took my own advice.
I’ve got mixed feelings on the OEM setup. On one hand, if this was a metal bumper the repair could’ve been brutal. I’ll probably be around $750 fixing it myself, maybe $1,500 to $2,000 at a shop. On the other hand, if it came with something more off-road ready from the factory, there’s a good chance this wouldn’t even be a problem.
Would’ve rather this happened on a trail than in a parking lot, but it is what it is. I’ll update once I start the repair. Curious what bumper you guys would throw on the Ghost.
