Hey everyone,

Big life update – my wife and I are expecting our first kid soon, and it’s made me reevaluate my current rig setup. Right now, I’m running a fully built 3rd Gen Tacoma that’s dialed for overland travel: armor, suspension, Camper, storage, the whole nine yards.

But as we prepare for life with a baby, I’m starting to wonder if it’s time to move on from the Tacoma and step into a 3rd Gen Tundra.

I’m sure some of you have made a similar move – going from a Tacoma to a Tundra – and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Here are some of the key points I’m thinking about:

What I love about the Tacoma:
  • It’s nimble off-road and fits just about anywhere
  • Fully built and super reliable
  • Decent fuel economy compared to full-size trucks
  • Tons of aftermarket support and mods already done
But here’s why the Tundra is calling my name:
  • Interior space – baby seats, strollers, diaper bags… the Tacoma’s back seat is tight
  • Payload capacity – I’m already pushing the limits with my current gear setup
  • More power – the Tacoma feels underpowered with a full load + camping gear
  • Comfort – long drives are going to be a lot more common with a kid in the mix. I don't have radar cruise or anything. 2017.....
My Concerns with the Tundra:
  • MPG hit (especially with a built rig) and 37s!
  • It’s a big jump in cost (used or new)
  • Is it too big for some trails I’ve loved in the Taco? The Sierras Nevadas are tight trails.
Has anyone here made the switch from a 3rd Gen Tacoma to a 3rd Gen Tundra—especially for family reasons? Do you regret it or feel like it was the right move?
Also, if anyone has family-friendly build suggestions or tips for traveling with a little one in a Tundra, I’m all ears.
Thanks in advance – I’ve been lurking for a bit and learning a lot. Hoping to join the Tundra family soon if it makes sense for our growing crew.

Cheers!
