- 2023 TRD Off Road SR5 4X4
I’ve been debating whether to pick up a solid 2nd Gen Tundra (2007–2021) or keep mynewer 3rd Gen (2022+). I know both have their die-hard fans, but I’d love to hear from those who’ve owned or driven both. Here’s what I’ve gathered so far — feel free to add, correct, or share your experiences.
2nd Gen Tundra – Pros:
2nd Gen Tundra – Pros:
- Proven 5.7L V8 engine – bulletproof reliability, simple and powerful.
- Easier to modify – massive aftermarket support, especially for overlanding and off-roading.
- No turbo lag or complex hybrid systems – just raw power and sound.
- Towing capacity and payload are still very competitive.
- Used market has plenty of well-maintained options at decent prices.
- Outdated interior tech – no Apple CarPlay on older models, basic infotainment.
- MPG isn’t great – thirsty V8 can hurt at the pump.
- Ride quality can be rough compared to newer trucks.
- No factory rear locker on many trims (unless you go TRD Pro or mod it).
- Modern tech – Apple CarPlay, large screens, better cameras, Toyota Safety Sense.
- More fuel-efficient with i-Force MAX hybrid option.
- Smoother ride – coil spring rear suspension improves comfort.
- Aggressive styling and better sound insulation.
- More refined interior with better materials and layout.
- Twin-turbo V6 isn’t everyone’s favorite – turbo lag and more complex maintenance.
- Less engine sound and “feel” compared to the V8.
- Limited aftermarket support (still growing but not quite 2nd Gen level).
- Expensive – especially if you’re looking at TRD Pro or i-Force MAX models.
