It fills a middle ground that really didn’t exist before in the truck camping world. On one side, you have roof top tents (RTTs). They’re a popular option, but they come with trade-offs. You can’t stand up to change, they require setup and teardown every time, they usually weigh a couple hundred pounds, and your gear is still exposed to the elements. On top of that, removal typically requires a lift system or multiple people. On the other side are hard wall slide-in campers. These are great for full setups, but most start around 1,000 lbs, require jacks to remove, and take up a lot of space when stored off the truck. Then there’s the ThAirCamper. This thing weighs in around 180 lbs, which makes it manageable with two people. It’s fully enclosed, keeps the interior clean and dry, and you can actually stand up inside. When you’re done using it, it packs down and can be stored in something as simple as a closet. From a usability standpoint, it really feels like a sweet spot between an RTT and a full slide-in camper. There are some trade-offs. You don’t get permanent mounting systems or hardwired lighting like you would with a traditional build. But there are simple workarounds using off-the-shelf parts and basic solutions that make it easy to adapt. I was definitely skeptical at first, but I could see the potential right away. After using it, I’ll say it’s been pretty impressive so far. The truck barely even notices it’s back there in terms of weight. I’m still experimenting with mounting setups and dialing everything in, but overall I’m honestly surprised with how well this thing works. Went out this weekend with my parents in law, wife and baby for a quick camp trip. We end out outside of Union Valley Reservoir here in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern, CA.

The trip ended pretty quickly due to my wife being sick earlier in the week. Then me coming down with the same sickness on Thursday and come Saturday morning even the baby started to get it. So what was supposed to be Friday - Sunday trip ended up being just a quick one nigher for use.

The camp spot was not too hard to get to. Had a great overlook of some mountains and was filled with animals surprisingly. Saw deer track, coyotes, and heard turkeys in the morning. The Turkeys were real surprising as we were at 4700ft elevation which I have never heard turkeys up that high.

We were camping in the new to us Taxa Outdoor Tiger moth trailer which is pretty awesome but we have a lot to talk about when it comes to this thing that needs to be upgraded. Look at the build thread below.

This is the opening post. I bought a trailer! Now let me start with I tested the Second Wind Flight XL trailer with my wife and newborn and it is awesome. Having a trailer with a dog and baby at this season is life is certainly the way to go for now. From there the search was on.

I was able to find a used Taxa Outdoor TigerMoth for 4k. The inside was in outstanding condition and he said he only used it a couple times. The outside is showing some wear from being stored outside but it nothing we can't resolve.

From here there is a few things we need to resolve on the build...
