I finally got some solid shots of the camper and wanted to share some thoughts. After spending some time with it, I keep coming back to the same conclusion… this setup just makes sense. It fills a middle ground that really didn’t exist before in the truck camping world. On one side, you have roof top tents (RTTs). They’re a popular option, but they come with trade-offs. You can’t stand up to change, they require setup and teardown every time, they usually weigh a couple hundred pounds, and your gear is still exposed to the elements. On top of that, removal typically requires a lift system or multiple people. On the other side are hard wall slide-in campers. These are great for full setups, but most start around 1,000 lbs, require jacks to remove, and take up a lot of space when stored off the truck. Then there’s the ThAirCamper. This thing weighs in around 180 lbs, which makes it manageable with two people. It’s fully enclosed, keeps the interior clean and dry, and you can actually stand up inside. When you’re done using it, it packs down and can be stored in something as simple as a closet. From a usability standpoint, it really feels like a sweet spot between an RTT and a full slide-in camper. There are some trade-offs. You don’t get permanent mounting systems or hardwired lighting like you would with a traditional build. But there are simple workarounds using off-the-shelf parts and basic solutions that make it easy to adapt. I was definitely skeptical at first, but I could see the potential right away. After using it, I’ll say it’s been pretty impressive so far. The truck barely even notices it’s back there in terms of weight. I’m still experimenting with mounting setups and dialing everything in, but overall I’m honestly surprised with how well this thing works. The new Tundra has a huge set of Catalytic Converters (CATS) on it to clean up the exhaust air. According the Department of Justice in California there are around 1,600 REPORTED catalytic converters stolen per month. This is around 50 a day!

Needless to say it is a problem and last thing you want is to be out for dinner, come to start the truck, and it greets you with the loudest roar heard to mankind.

So I invested in some "cheap insurance" I guess you could say. Some peace of mind knowing that if someone wants to mess with my truck they can get under there and give up because its not easy.

I did some research and Cali Raised seems to be a common choice. Made from stainless steel and the coverage is very complete.

Initial impressions of the shields are that they're pretty nice. They are cut well and have the holes for weight savings. There are some minor burs left from the machine process so you may want to wear gloves. They seem like they have more than enough coverage.
