Hey y’all — quick question I finally decided to look into. On the 2022+ Tundras with the JBL audio system, there’s that little box under the driver seat. I always wondered what it actually does, so I dug around a bit.
Turns out it’s the JBL amplifier for the entire premium audio setup.
Here’s what it does:
Powers all the speakers + the factory sub
Handles the EQ, crossover points, and time alignment
Sends the right frequencies to each speaker (tweeters, mids, sub)
Helps balance volume and clarity across the cabin
Toyota sticks it under the driver seat because it gets better airflow, stays cool, and keeps wiring runs short.
If you’re thinking about upgrading the system, a lot of people say the factory JBL amp is one of the bigger limitations. Most aftermarket setups either bypass it or tap into it with a DSP if you’re adding a better amp or sub.
Anyone here upgraded the JBL system on a 3rd-gen yet? Curious what route you went and how big of a difference it made.
