- 2023 TRD Off Road SR5 4X4
When it comes to upgrading suspension on the 3rd Gen Tundra, there are two names that always dominate the conversation: FOX and King. Both are top-tier options that offer serious off-road performance, comfort, and durability—but choosing between them isn’t just about brand loyalty. It comes down to your build style, driving habits, and long-term goals.
After doing a deep dive and talking to other Tundra owners, I’ve narrowed it down to a few key factors to consider when deciding between the two.
FOX Suspension – Proven Performance & Versatility
FOX is one of the most trusted names in the off-road world. Their 2.5 Performance Elite Series with DSC (Dual Speed Compression) is a super popular option for the 3rd Gen Tundra—and for good reason. It offers adjustable ride control so you can fine-tune your suspension based on terrain, load, or driving preference.
What I love about FOX is that it strikes a balance between comfort and capability. Whether you’re commuting during the week or hitting trails on the weekend, FOX keeps things smooth and controlled. Their internal bypass technology and high-quality build offer serious reliability without being overkill for light to moderate off-roading.
You’ll find a lot of support, install guides, and community feedback with FOX—which makes it great if you’re wrenching at home or looking for long-term upgrade paths.
King Shocks – Ultimate Off-Road Control & Custom Tuning
Now if you’re planning to go harder off-road—or just want that “overbuilt” confidence—King Shocks are the gold standard. The King 2.5 Remote Reservoir Coilovers with compression adjusters are known for insane durability, heat dissipation, and a plush ride at speed.
Where King really shines is tuning potential. These shocks can be custom-valved for your exact setup, weight distribution, and driving style. That’s huge if you’re loaded down with armor, roof racks, RTTs, or pulling a trailer. King setups are often used in Baja rigs for a reason—they’re built to take punishment without fading.
The only downside? King’s tuning capabilities mean they can be a bit overkill for casual use, and they usually require more maintenance (think frequent shock servicing if you’re pushing them hard). Also, they run at a slightly higher price point compared to FOX.
My Take for the 3rd Gen Tundra
If you’re building a daily-driven overland truck with weekend trail runs and some moderate wheeling, FOX is hard to beat. It’s more “set it and forget it,” with excellent adjustability and a plush, street-friendly ride.
But if you’re going all-in on performance, regularly hitting high-speed dirt or loaded rock crawls, and want every ounce of customization—King is where it’s at.
Both are premium, both will transform your Tundra, and honestly—you can’t go wrong either way.
What are you running or leaning toward? Let’s compare setups—drop your thoughts or tag your current suspension setup.
