Hey everyone,
I wanted to start a thread about the built-in trailer brake controller on the 2022+ Tundra. I’ve been using it a bit more lately, and I’m curious how others feel about it compared to aftermarket units like Tekonsha, Redarc, etc.
So far, the factory controller seems pretty solid. It’s nice having everything integrated into the dash, and I like being able to see the gain settings right on the screen without any extra modules hanging off the dash. But I’m still getting used to how it actually behaves under braking.
A few things I’m wondering about:
- Does the factory controller feel smooth to you, or does it grab a little too hard?
- Do you run lower gain or higher gain than you did with older trucks?
- How does it do with heavier trailers vs. smaller utility trailers?
- Anyone tested the manual override — responsive enough for your liking?
- Any issues syncing with electric brakes vs. electric-over-hydraulic setups?
I know Toyota’s towing package on the 3rd gen is a big upgrade over previous years, so I’m hoping the brake controller lives up to that. Just wanted to hear some real-world feedback from people who tow regularly.
What’s your experience been like with the 2022+ Tundra’s built-in brake controller? Would you trust it long-term, or would you still go aftermarket
