Now before I go driving off into the sunset with my new Tundra — the 2022+ third-gen has been out long enough for real ownership feedback to surface. I’m curious what you consider the most annoying issues so far. Not the catastrophic stuff like blown engines — I’m talking about the little things that make you roll your eyes every time you drive it.

Here are a few I’ve noticed or seen come up a lot:

  • Panoramic roof rattle – drives me crazy, but there’s a DIY fix I still need to try.
  • Hesitation from a stop / weird transmission behavior – covered under TSB-0111-22, but lots of people still complain about it on Facebook.
  • Remote start removed from the key fob unless you pay for Connected Services — still wild to me.
  • Tailgate has no dampener — it drops like a rock unless you add one yourself.
  • No physical HVAC buttons on some trims — touchscreen only, which is annoying while driving.
  • No factory tow mirrors unless you buy SR5 + TRD Off-Road or higher — so many people want them, why limit it?
  • Wind noise around the mirrors / A-pillars — common highway complaint. I have it, doesn’t bother me much, but it’s there.
  • Center console creaks/rubs – any pressure on it and the plastics make noise.

I’m not saying the truck is bad — every truck has quirks — but the 3rd gen definitely has a few “why did Toyota do this?” moments. These are minor issues, but they do show up in owner complaints, and yeah, I notice them too. Still… the truck is solid, and I’d absolutely buy it again.

Now here’s the reality from someone who works in manufacturing: COVID destroyed manufacturing. There, I said it. Toyota lost around 80% of its workforce during that time. Do you know how much tribal knowledge walks out the door when that happens? Whether you buy GMC, Chevy, Ford, Toyota — anything built 2020+ has issues. Pick your poison.

If you think Toyota messed up, go look into the failure rates on the Jeep 3.6L Pentastar right now. Spoiler: worse than the Tundra, and people still line up to buy Jeeps.

So yeah, Toyota is known for reliability — and they did stumble in a few areas with this gen — but does that make it a bad truck? Not even close. It’s still a great truck, and I’d rather vote with my dollars for Toyota than go anywhere else.
