I know recovery gear can get expensive pretty quickly, especially once you start looking at winches, bumpers, wiring, all of that. For a lot of casual off-roaders it just doesn’t really make sense. By the time it’s all said and done you’re pretty deep into it cost-wise. That’s why I ended up running Maxtrax instead.
Right now I have a pair of Maxtrax and they’ve proven to be so useful when needed that I’m already thinking about getting a second pair to have one for each tire. They’re also extremely easy to deal with. I’ve had them mounted on a cheap bed MOLLE panel, a roof rack, and now my bed rack. First setup I ever did was literally a $50 MOLLE panel with zip ties because that’s what I could afford at the time, and it worked fine. If you don’t want to mount them at all you can just toss them in the bed, they’re pretty much indestructible.
What really sold me on the importance of having them was just getting stuck a couple times while out solo. I overland by myself pretty often and I’ve been stuck twice where a shovel wasn’t going to do much. Both times the boards got me out in maybe 10 minutes without needing another truck. One of those was in deep desert sand too, so even if I had a winch it wouldn’t have done much since there was nothing to hook onto anyway.
At this point I view them like insurance. You don’t think about them much until you actually need them, and then you’re really glad they’re there. If you’re in snow a lot I’d say they’re even more of a no-brainer.
Let me know your thoughts or experiences with recovery boards below. If anyone has questions about how I mounted mine or what I’m using, happy to share what’s worked for me.
