When I was researching tires for my Tundra, I realized there’s a ton of categories out there beyond just “all-terrain” and “mud terrain.” Some of them are marketing, some are legit design differences. Thought I’d share a quick breakdown to help anyone else who’s trying to figure out what’s best for their build.

HT – Highway Terrain
These are your stock-style, daily-driver tires. Smooth ride, quiet, decent MPG, but not much off-road capability.

AT – All-Terrain
The all-rounder. Balanced between pavement and dirt roads. Great for hunting, camping, and light trails. Not too noisy, not too rough.

RT – Rugged Terrain (Hybrid)
This is the “in-between” tire. Basically an AT tread center with MT-style sidewalls. More grip off-road than an AT, but quieter and easier to live with than a full MT.

MT – Mud Terrain
The aggressive ones. Huge lugs, tons of traction in mud, sand, rocks. But they’re loud, rough, and your MPG will take a hit.

XT – Extreme Terrain

Kind of a newer marketing term. They sit between RT and MT but are styled aggressively. A lot of show trucks run these because they look gnarly but still have decent road manners.

Winter / Snow
Not a “truck tire” per se, but worth mentioning. Softer compound, tons of siping. If you live in snow country, these can make a huge difference.

Performance / Street Truck Tires
More rare, but you’ll see them on lowered or sport trucks. Not really for off-road — designed for grip and handling on pavement.

Personal Note:
I ran MT on my Tacoma for basically the whole lift time of the truck. And now running AT on the Tundra I do not think I will ever go back for my use case. The Tundra to me is no hardcore offroad rig nor do I want it to be and MTs though the do look good, make a ton of noise, ride rough, and once you wear down through the lugs they get hard and even worse.

Personally, I think I am going to stick in the AT maybe even RT world just to keep a mild friendly to drive tone.
